2006 – PRESENT   •  EDITOR, PRESIDENT, Y oung Writers Project, an award-winning program that engages students to write, teaches them to improve and publishes their best work in newspapers, on radio stations, on television and on stage. Conceived project in 2003, took it independent as a 501(c)3 nonprofit in August 2006. Design and build interactive Web sites for student writers, schools, after-school project and multi-media projects. YWP has worked with thousands of students with the help of volunteer teachers and students.

2000 – 2006   •  MANAGING EDITOR, Burlington Free Press, Burlington, Vermont
Led day-to-day content and operations; oversaw 55 editors, reporters, photographers, graphic artists and clerks. Edited in-depth, database and investigative projects. Oversaw special sections and major news. Led major redesign (2001) and launch of news Web site (2000). Work received major regional and national awards. Juror, Pulitzer Prize for Beat reporting (two years).

1998 -- 2000  •  ASSISTANT MANAGING EDITOR, Burlington Free Press
Led 25 editors, reporters and clerks. Conceived and edited yearlong Vermont 20th Century project. Oversaw projects. Reorganized newsroom (1998). Helped Gannett’s Westchester (N.Y.) newspapers convert to single paper; developed weekly feature to analyze public companies (1998). Promoted 2000.

1996 -- 1998  •  ASSISTANT MANAGING EDITOR, Akron Beacon Journal, Akron, Ohio
Led 65 editors, reporters and clerks in metro and community news, State House and Washington bureaus, religion, real estate, business and columnists. Oversaw local news coverage and projects. Developed strategic plan for new edition, bureau and Sunday supplements (1997).

1992 -- 1996  •  BUSINESS EDITOR, Akron Beacon Journal
Led staff of 14. Edited numerous investigative projects. Led development of paper’s Web site, one of the first in the country. Rewrote paper’s successful proposal for new $32 million presses (1995). Promoted 1995, 1996. Business section named top in the country three straight years.

Editor of investigative projects and news stories that received state (Ohio and Vermont), regional and national awards. Among them: George Polk Award for Medical Reporting (2002); Gerald Loeb Award for business news, finalist (2002); Gannett Gold Medal (1999); Gannett Public Service Award (1999, 2001, finalist 1998 & 2002); Gannett Freedom of Information Award (1999, finalist 2001 & 2002 ); APME Freedom of Information Award, finalist, (2000, 2002); University of Florida Freedom of Information Award (2002); New England Newspaper Association Publick Occurrences Award (2001, 2002, 2003); Society of American Business Editors and Writers awards for best business section in nation (1995, 1996, 1997) and spot news coverage (2001,2003, 2004). Project: Young Writers Project given innovation award by New England Newspaper Association (2005)

Lee McIsaac directs YWP's mentoring and publication programs.Kate Fallone is a longtime UVM mentor and YWP instructor.
