UPDATED
We had so much fun with the first Vermont Writes Day, we decided to do a second and a third. We held the second one on March 17. (Go to vermontwrites.ywpvt.net to see a sampling of student work from the day.) The third is planned for May 5 and will focus on farming and will include this prompt:
- FARMING: Why is farming important to the state of Vermont. (Depending on the state of the legislature, we may ask legislators join in at their local schools.)
We did not keep track of participation in Vermont Writes Day II but we know that dozens of schools -- and thousands of kids -- participated. We sent out invitations to professional authors to go to their local schools. One story: Swanton School had the entire school writing and invited four authors to come in to join them. Hats off to the school's principal, Julie Benay, who is Web-centric and is working with her teachers to get all sorts of things happening.
We have sent out word to schools, students, teachers and authors about this one. We are inviting more than 150 Vermont writers to go to their local schools to write with the kids for seven minutes. We hope the professionals can find the time to do this and we can't wait to hear back from them how it went.
Here were the prompts for Vermont Writes Day II:
- GREEN. "I've never seen such a brilliant shade of green in my life...."
- STRUGGLES. "I am really struggling right now with..."
- LUCK. Write an anecdote about a time you had luck or wish you had luck. Pick any one topic and write for seven minutes!
