Friday was a good day for YWP. Bullet highlights (more later):
- FairPoint Communications announced a major grant to support Online Writing Centers at four schools, to help fund an efficacy study by a local college or university and to fund special publication of student work. Thanks to them.
- Vermont Public Radio said it plans to cover -- from start to finish -- our Ballad Writing Workshop series being led by musician and songwriter Pete Sutherland. Benson Village School and Swanton Middle School were chosen. This should make for a fabulous experience for the students and a great radio story for VPR.
- We've built a unique online writing classroom for a group of 15 high school students taking part in Jay Craven's series of workshops on comedy writing. YWP is a partner in this effort that will end up with two live performances and a radio show. The site: theshow.ywpvt.net. This site won't have much to show you just yet -- the students will be creating in a private space.
- And Reuben Jackson, a Washington, D.C. poet and Goddard College graduate, has become our first author mentor. He will be working online with some of the more experienced students on youngwritersproject.org. Our plan is to bring more authors onto the site in the coming months. (Why a Washington, D.C., poet? He discovered us on Facebook. Go figure.)
