Anna

Daughter Anna

This is downtown Blackey, Kentucky, home of 154 people and, a while ago, Loretta Lynn. This is coal country. Life is different in Blackey; people are poor, jobs are scarce and coal has taken a toll on the people. But the area is rich with music, with heritage and with tradition. Nearby an organization called AppalShop, an arts and education center that helps the community create recordings, video and community events. This is a snippet from a recent music festival. Playing fiddle is, actually, a young woman from Vermont, my daughter Anna.

She has graduated from Wesleyan and is off galavantin' -- playing music and having fun in West Viriginia, Kentucky and all over. God bless.
